Music Therapy and Mental Health
Music therapy is a successful and valid treatment for individuals who have psychosocial, affective, cognitive and communicative needs. Music is a method of therapy that provokes responses due to the familiarity, predictability and feelings of security associated with it.
Music therapy intervention provides opportunities to:
Explore personal feelings and therapeutic issues such as self-esteem or personal insight
Have a sense of control over life through successful experiences
Express oneself verbally and non-verbally
Develop coping and relaxation skills
Improve problem solving skills
Interact appropriately with others
Develop independence and decision making skills
Resolve conflicts leading to stronger family and peer relationships.
